Overview of DDE Project at SUNY Cortland

Abstract:

This five year project (1999-2004) has as its primary goal to strengthen and improve the preparation of preservice elementary teachers at SUNY Cortland, particularly in the areas of math, science and computer technology. To do this, this project has three main objectives:

1. To develop strong partnerships with high-needs districts in our area for the purposes of supporting high-quality mathematics, science and computer education. These districts will then be better prepared to host and mentor preservice teachers from SUNY Cortland.

2. To improve the pedagogical preparation of SUNY Cortland preservice teachers in the areas of math, science and computer education. Specifically, we plan to increase and improve the time our students spend in classrooms with practicing teachers.

3. To improve the content prepartion of preservice teachers in the areas of math, science and computer education through a partnership with the School of Arts and Sciences at SUNY Cortland. Content courses designed for elementary education majors have already been developed. This project will work to support the faculty teaching those courses so that they continue to improve and provide our preservice teachers with the content understandings they will need to implement the NYS Learning Standards.
