All candidates
in ECE, CED, ECC and EED (old program) majors have to meet a language
proficiency requirement. How that requirement can be fulfilled varies
by catalog year and when a student started at SUNY Cortland.
FOR
STUDENTS ENTERING SUNY CORTLAND AS FRESHMEN
For
candidates ENTERING SUNY CORTLAND AS FRESHMEN AND bound by requirements
in the 2000 College Catalog OR EARLIER (i.e. old program students),
the foreign language proficiency requirement can be met by doing
ONE of the following:
1. Providing
evidence that the candidate successfully completed a minimum of
two years of foreign language study at the high school level.
NO COURSE CREDIT IS GIVEN, BUT THE REQUIREMENT IS WAIVED.
2. Successfully completing up to the 102 of a given language at
SUNY Cortland.
3. Successfully completing the equivalent of a year of a college
foreign language at a two-year or four-year college and transferring
those credits into SUNY Cortland.
4. Successfully passing a language proficiency exam (CLEP) through
the 102 level. SUNY Cortland does not offer language proficiency
exams, but the International Culture and Communication Department
has information on where such exams are offered.
For candidates ENTERING SUNY CORTLAND AS FRESHMEN AND bound by the
requirements in the 2001 or 2002 catalogs, the foreign language
proficiency requirement can be met by doing ONE of the following:
1. Successfully completing up to the 102 of a given language at
SUNY Cortland. If candidates had a foreign language in high school,
they should consult with their advisor to determine if they would
be able to enter directly into the 102 level of that language
or should start at the 101 level.
2. Successfully completing the equivalent of a year of a college
foreign language at a two-year or four-year college and transferring
those credits into SUNY Cortland.
3. Successfully passing a language proficiency exam (CLEP) through
the 102 level. SUNY Cortland does not offer language proficiency
exams, but the International Culture and Communication Department
has information on where such exams are offered.
FOR
STUDENTS ENTERING SUNY CORTLAND AS TRANSFER STUDENTS
For
candidates ENTERING SUNY CORTLAND AS TRANSFER STUDENTS BEFORE
FALL 2002, the foreign language proficiency requirement can
be met by doing ONE of the following:
1.
Providing evidence that the candidate successfully completed
a minimum of two years of foreign language study at the
high school level. NO COURSE CREDIT IS GIVEN, BUT THE REQUIREMENT
IS WAIVED.
2. Successfully completing up to the 102 of a given language
at SUNY Cortland.
3. Successfully completing the equivalent of a year of a
college foreign language at a two-year or four-year college
and transferring those credits into SUNY Cortland.
4. Successfully passing a language proficiency exam through

For candidates ENTERING SUNY CORTLAND AS TRANSFER STUDENTS
IN THE FALL OF 2002 OR AFTER, the foreign language proficiency
requirement can be met by doing ONE of the following:

Successfully completing up to the 102 of a given language
at SUNY Cortland. If candidates had a foreign language
in high school, they should consult with their advisor
to determine if they would be able to enter directly into
the 102 level of that language or should start at the
101 level.
2. Successfully completing the equivalent of a year of
a college foreign language at a two-year or four-year
college and transferring those credits into SUNY Cortland.
3. Successfully passing a language proficiency exam through
the 102 level. SUNY Cortland does not offer language proficiency
exams, but the International Culture and Communication
Department has information on where such exams are offered.
NOTE: One year of American Sign Language
at the college level can be used by ALL teacher education candidates
- no matter what year they entered SUNY Cortland - to fulfill
their foreign language proficiency requirement.
