REQUIRED COURSEWORK

Four consecutive semesters of coursework are required for this program. The courses for each of the semesters are as follows. Additional requirements for successful completion of the program appear after the coursework.

A. Spring Semester - 12 credit hours

 

EDU 510 - Inquiry into Teaching, Technology, and Research (3 credits)

       Observation (30 clock hours at site)

EDU 511 - Teaching Literacy in the Primary Grades (3 credits)

EDU 512 - Teaching Elementary School Mathematics (3 credits)

EDU 513 - Teaching Elementary School Science (3 credits)

B.  Summer Session I – 6 credit hours     

EDU 514 - Teaching Elementary Social Studies (3 credit hours)

C.  Summer Session II – 6 credit hours

EDU 516 - Teaching Literacy in the Intermediate Grades (3 credit hours)

                   Tutorial (25 clock hours on site)

EDU 650 - Educational Assessment (3 credit hours)

D. Fall Semester – 12 credit hours

EDU 656 - Classroom Applications of Child Development (3 credit hours)

EDU 657 - Elementary School Practicum and Research Seminar (3 credit hours)

       Practicum (100 clock hours)

EDU 658 - Classroom Organization and Mgt: Theory & Practice (3 credit hours)

E.  Spring Semester – 15 credit hours

 

Teaching (Minimum of two six-week, full-time teaching placements at two levels, and seminars)

EDU 690 - Student Teaching I (6 credit hours)

EDU 691 - Student Teaching II (6 credit hours)

EDU 698 - Student Teaching/Culminating Research Project Seminar (3 credit hours)

Total Credit Hours = 51

Completion of Program

1.  All required courses in the MST program, including the master’s project

2.  Overall grade point average of at least 3.0 in the MST program

3.  Additional New York State certification requirements fulfilled:

a.  Health Education Course that fulfills state mandate (e.g. Health 265)

b.  Passing score on the Liberal Arts and Sciences Test (LAST)

c.  Passing score on the Assessment of Teaching Skills - Written (ATS-W)

d.  Content Specialty Test (CST)

e.  Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting Workshop

f.  Violence Workshop (SAVE)
